Vietnam War Protest at UK- The burning down of the ROTC building

Anyone familiar with this? All I can find are some pictures online and an incomplete news story in the Herald-Leader with end of the world headlines about it being set ablaze. My parents were in married student housing (with me on the way) close to where Kroger Field is now. It doesn't look like anyone was ever arrested. My Dad passed away more than 20 years ago but my Mom brought it up and told me her parents were scared because she was pregnant and thought maybe she should come home. The same thing happened that day at the University of Alabama.

We Beat The Dream Team Documentary

On HBO Max and it says TNT Sports on the title so I assume it would be on both

One of the best documentaries I've ever seen. Story of when the USA select college team played the Dream Team(first USA team with pro players, considered greatest team ever across all sports). This was while they were getting ready for the Olympics so you could call it training camp. With a huge but hilarious twist at the end. Mashburn is one of the main guys.

It's done almost exactly in a 30 for 30 fashion, with the key cog of the doc being storytelling and from different perspectives. Also Coach k comes across as kind of a petty bitch which is good.

Random funny story about the Dream Team, as some of you know I sell sports cards and memorabilia for a living and years ago bought a team set of the 92 dream team starting lineup figurines. It has everyone even Jordan.....except Leattner. They left Leattner out of the product completely 😂 *still have them if anyone wants to see a photo I can put it on Twitter then post the tweet here

Expectations for 2024-25

I'll have to say, my expectations have shifted multiple times since the end of the season...

When Mitch and Cal first said Calipari would be staying, with some expected changes (I didn't like it, wanted Cal gone), I expected this year's team to be talented and win a number of regular season games, but to ultimately finish the same way as all his recent teams failed, which was to get a decent seed but melt in the postseason.

April 9th, when Calipari announced he was leaving for Arkansas, I expected him to take everyone and leave the cupboard completely bare for whoever the next coach would be. I expected 2024-25 would be either around a .500 season or maybe even a losing season.

April 12th, along comes Mark Pope. My initial expectations weren't very high. In fact, I initially was upset with the hire. I thought UK could do better. I expected we'd be looking at maybe a .500 season.

April 14th: then came his introduction and I was sold on him as the right guy at the right time. But still, the cupboard was bare, and even with a group of Kentucky unforgettables, I thought they'd be struggling to even get to 20 wins and make the Dance.

And then Pope started recruiting and bringing in his assistants and the team started coming together. I like the experience on the team. I like the shooters on the team. I like that these guys can defend, which was something we were painfully missing last season. I expect Pope, an offensive savant, to get these guys scoring well. When Jaxson Robinson withdrew from the NBA draft, I was very excited. My expectations became much higher at this point, but I was still worried about worried about chemistry and cohesiveness from so many transfers. I was expecting a team that would win a good number of games, likely win every game they're favored to win but lose against the best teams. So, I expected a team that gets to 20, maybe up to 22 wins, makes the Dance in 7-10 range.

July 17: Then comes the practices and scrimmage with La Familia where this team beats La Familia and their shooting is off the charts, followed by additional summer workouts and reports. So, at this point, for better or worse, my expectations soared. At this point, I was thinking the team could go deep into the postseason and even make a Final Four with a couple breaks.

October 15: Ok, so now that I've looked at some of the best teams in the league- Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Arkansas, and Texas, and some of these national contenders like Kansas, UConn, Houston, Gonzaga, Duke UNC, and I realize there are a bunch of really good teams this season. The transfer portal and NIL money has allowed coaches to sign key players. So, I still think this UK team has the ability (because they can shoot the ball and they can defend) to be very good. But I feel like Final Fours are out for now in my mind. It seems unreasonable to expect that for a first season with a new coach and an entirely new team. My expectations now are that this team will be very good, win a bunch of games this season, beat some teams they're not expected to beat, make the Dance, and could make a good run in the postseason if the team continues to improve. I'm expecting 24 or so wins, a 4-5 seed, a Sweet 16 with the potential to go deeper. It's much better than I expected when Calipari left but much less than I thought when I was giddy back in July.

Basketball TBT will return to Lexington

The Basketball Tournament (TBT) Returns to Lexington for TBT 2025

Kentucky Alumni Team Led by Willie Cauley-Stein to Play at Memorial Coliseum July 18-23

LEXINGTON, Ky., Feb. 24, 2025 – The Basketball Tournament (TBT), the 64-team, $1 million winner-take-all event, announced today that Lexington will once again serve as one of the regional locations for the 2025 event. La Familia, the Kentucky alumni team, will return as the featured team in the eight-team Lexington Regional hosted by the University of Kentucky.

Kentucky Regional games will be played at Memorial Coliseum July 18-23.

Willie Cauley-Stein, TBT’s reigning Defensive Player of the Year, will return to play for La Familia in 2025.

La Familia will look to build on the success of last summer’s debut at Rupp Arena. Led by Cauley-Stein, Eric Bledsoe, and the Harrison twins, the Kentucky alumni team captured the Lexington Regional title and made a run to TBT’s semifinals, highlighted by a thrilling quarterfinal victory over The Ville (Louisville Alumni) in front of 13,506 fans at Freedom Hall.

La Familia is organized by general manager Twany Beckham, who played at Kentucky from 2011-13. They will be joined in the regional by seven other teams hoping to emerge one step closer to TBT’s $1 million grand prize.

“We can’t wait to welcome back some Wildcat legends for TBT, because last summer was electric,” said Kentucky men’s basketball head coach Mark Pope. “I know Big Blue Nation and our team will be ready to help create an epic environment in Memorial and help the guys chase a championship.”

"La Familia and their fan base took TBT by storm last year,” said TBT founder and CEO Jon Mugar. “Twany rapidly built a fan favorite that contended for the championship, which is nearly impossible to do in the first year of TBT. We look forward to partnering with the University of Kentucky to host games in the newly renovated Memorial Coliseum. Big Blue Nation will have it rocking.”

“We had a great time competing in TBT,” said La Familia general manager Twany Beckham. “The support from the university, the community, Big Blue Nation and our partners was incredible. We’re excited to compete again this year and look forward to making another deep run in the tournament!”

The winner of the Lexington Regional will advance to TBT’s quarterfinals on July 28. The semifinals will be held on July 31, and TBT’s $1 million championship will be played on Aug. 3.

For the first time, TBT will give each host team the opportunity to have home court advantage for the quarterfinals, semifinals, and the $1 million championship game. Should two regional hosts face off, the tiebreaker will be determined by which host sells 4,000 tickets the fastest

In addition to Cauley-Stein, La Familia will make additional roster announcements in the spring via their social media pages, @LaFamiliaTBT.

Tickets for the 2025 Lexington Regional will go on sale May 6. Fans can sign up for ticket and team notifications at tbthoops.com/tickets/notifications.
