This team is going to be deep! Lots of guys who are use to getting big minutes which will be an adjustment but I think most know what they signed up for. I love the most recent addition I mean I know he played at a small school but 16 ppg at the d1 level is no accident he can flat out play. I feel like in his mind he sees himself as having a chance to start so we will see how it all plays out. The competetion will be great for the guys. I love this team.

This is wonderful and thank you again for these.

I’d like to see this side by side the same chart for the players Pope had at BYU last year.

With Pope's run and gun, and everyone crash the boards style of play, I don't see too many guys playing 30+ minutes.

Yeah, those are some impressive numbers. The stat that jumps out immediately to me is the fact that 5 of those guys shoot the 3 at 37% or better. If you round up by only .006 on Almonor, you've got 3 guys shooting 40% or better. That's rare. These numbers don't even consider the shooting percentages of any of our freshmen recruits, and they are all known as shooters. So, 3pt shooting should not be a problem for this team, and that's a big advantage.

I think this year Butler will play the way we all wanted Wheeler to play. When he played within himself didn’t jack up 3s and drive into trouble wheeler had some great games. With all the experience Butler has he just needs to be a floor general for us find all the shooters rebound and play some D. I know we are used to having point guards that score quite a bit but I think we may see more of a facilitator role. To be fair Cal at that time only had 1-2 shooters per season we have so many more now!

It's one thing to shoot 40%, but it's another to shoot that on a high volume like Brea, Kriisa, and Almonor. If Lamont Butler's jumper benefits from the difference in offensive style (similar to Keshad Johnson going to Arizona) then we will have 4 good or elite shooters on the court at all times playing with a center who can protect the rim on defense and pass on offense.

That's just what the doctor ordered.

Butler played Wheeler this past season and completely destroyed him. Might be my favorite add so far and that's saying something. Dude plays to win.

Yeah… Wheeler had 19 and 6 assist… LB had 7 and 4…
Stats don't tell the whole story. I watched the game and Butler bothered Wheeler every time he matched up with him. I think only 3 of those points you reference were with Butler guarding him. 5 steals and 5 deflections. Wheeler was also not guarding Butler on the other end. Wheeler was hiding on whoever the guy in the corner was. Eye test says Butler owned him

Yep, totally agree. On paper, this team is very dangerous and could really take off and play well. Of course, Pope has to get these guys to mesh and develop chemistry. That's easier said than done, but I think his passion for the game and for UK will be contagious. I'm excited to see how it all goes.

I'm also excited to have a coach whose strength is creating shots for players and using his understanding of the game to teach his guys how to make plays, that is, having a guy who's known and respected for his x's and o's. And hey, how about a guy who isn't afraid to use some different defenses, trap someone to catch someone off guard or press or (gasp!) play some zone to throw off an opponent's offensive rhythm.

I think of how many times we watched teams get into a rhythm last season and just pound us with the same play over and again, it was infuriating. Gotta mix things up sometimes, throw them out of balance, break their rhythm. I'm excited about the defensive prowess these transfers have, also. I'm ready for the season right now! 😀

Gonna be a long off season, especially once all the booms are done. Hopefully the football team balls out to pass the time.

I’d like to see this side by side the same chart for the players Pope had at BYU last year.
Go here and simply scroll down to PER GAME schedule. Stats are the same as those I selected to display.
You can rank each column by clicking on the column header.
Essentially, BYU played ten (10) players who averaged between 9.4 and 29.3 minutes per game.
Here are the stats for Kentucky to provide for additional comparisons:

Again might want to look at the OVERALL stats it’s not even close WHEELER out played him
Looking at a box score < watching a game.

Not trying to be an a-hole, but if I went by points and assists alone I would've assumed Sahvir Wheeler was one of the best point guards to play under Calipari at Kentucky

QUESTION: With nine (9) players coming in that logged 251.4 minutes a game last year and everyone playing at least 22.7 minutes ...

Could this be the MOST EXPERIENCED team in the history of college basketball ???

GO CATS !!!

Butler was solid as a catch and shoot 3 point shooter last year. It was his off the dribble percentage, where he was one of the worst in the country, that makes him look worse. I don't think he'll be taking many off the dribble threes in Pope's offense.

Read that Robinson, Oweh and Brea would man the three. Will either Brea or Oweh get some two minutes? Butler and Krissa at the one and two? Or might Brea or Oweh start at the two? Said that Robinson gives us that three level scorer so now we have at least three 3-level scorers in Robinson, Chandler and Noah. Perry will be the number 3 point guard behind Krissa and Butler? I do not remember a Kentucky roster this deep with experienced proven talent like this. Pope has his work cut out for him to get all this worked out to be the best it can be. Nice problem to have.

Pope will have a 10 man rotation. He had about that at BYU. I don't think Robinson was even a starter. So Pope pulled a Rob and Reed with him.

I wouldn't go that far. The two wings that started ahead of Robinson had PERs about the same as Robinson and both averaged double figures with more experience in Pope's system(unless I'm wrong I think Robinson was the new guy?). Robinson was probably marginally better than either but Rob and Shep were a lot more than marginally better than Edwards and Wagner and they were all new guys.

Do not know why, but Robinson started and played more minutes his first year at BYU than last year, oddly enough.

Plus Robinson requested to come off the bench, said he was more comfortable with that. That needs to be taken into account when comparing his situation with Reed and Dilly's.

I think his seeming reluctance to get into bidding wars helps with team chemistry. Also, all of these guys genuinely seem to be team first and want to win above all else.

I am pumped. It may not come together as well as I hope, but I love Pope’s approach.

For those wondering, these statistics, when applied to 5 positions getting 40 minutes per game. If those 9 players got equal playing time and repeated their averages, it would equate to 84.8PPG and 31.9RPG

Almonor and Carr are very intriguing in Pope's offense. Watching the vids, the PF runs a lot of "lifts" towards the 3 point line where the defense leaves him open a lot defending the ball screen action. These 2 might have monster seasons with their ability to shoot from that position.

Very good information. Thank you.

Offering a couple of additional columns for quick reference. (I put them in the same order in case there is a desire to add to the original matrix.)

One thing that stands out to me is the balance of the team. Great size, bulk, maturity. We should not have the same problem as last year where the interior was too small/thin and were easily pushed out of rebounding position. All look like potential big contributors. Pre-season practices will be very competitive trying to establish playing order. There may be some surprises regarding the starting lineup (which may vary as the year progresses).

Should be a fun year.

Thanks for the information. I updated the schedule in the original post, but changed Chandler to be listed at 6'4" height, which I thought I remembered from early on and appears to be correct.
