Vic Bubas took Duke to three Final Fours in four years from 1963-1966 back when only the conference tournament winner could go. (NCAA field varied between 22-25 teams from 1953–1974) Art Heyman of Duke was MOP of the 1963 FF even though his team finished third. I'd have to look up the exact number but there has not been many MOP'S of the FF whose team did not win the whole enchilada. (Daryl? Jon?)

Regarding the post I quoted. All Cal does is win and go to the Final Four almost every year. 99% of the schools would love to be in Kentucky's shoes. It's just so damn hard to win the whole thing.

The NCAA started seeding teams in 1979. The Tournament field expanded to 64 teams in 1985 and yet, look at this:

All four #1 seeds making it to the Final Four:

Has happened only once, in 2008 when Kansas, North Carolina, UCLA, and Memphis all won their regionals. (three did make it in 2015)

Two #1 seeds making it to the championship game:

Has happened just 7 times, 6 times since the field expanded to 64:
  • 1982-North Carolina beat Georgetown
  • 1993- North Carolina beat Michigan
  • 1999- Connecticut beat Duke
  • 2005- North Carolina beat Illinois
  • 2007– Florida beat Ohio State
  • 2008- Kansas beat Memphis (the year the Final Four were all #1 seeds)
  • 2015- Duke beat Wisconsin
So just ponder for a second that in 30 years of the 64+ team field only six times has two # 1 seeds played for the gold. That's pretty mind boggling to me and if that doesn't speak to the difficulty of even getting to that last game then I don't know what else can illustrate that.

One of the best runs by a school that very few people mention was UC's run in the late 50's/early 60's. It happened with two coaches, so it's not an answer to this questions, but impressive none the less:

1959 - Final Four
1960 - Final Four
1961 - National Championship
1962 - National Championship
1963 - Runner-up

It's like the Vietnam War killed UCs b-ball program. They have not had much relevance since.

That was a great time to be a college hoops fan in Ohio. The 1960 champ was Ohio St, and Ohio St was beaten by Cincy in the finals in 1961 and 1962.

Just wait, Cut Nets will be here later telling us how this constitutes a failure on Cals part because only titles matter
