Patrick Towles’ announcement Sunday afternoon that he intends to transfer from the University of Kentucky means the Wildcats will have three scholarship quarterbacks on the roster for the 2016 season.

Drew Barker, who took over starting QB duties from Towles two weeks ago, will be a sophomore next season and is the early favorite to win the starting quarterback job. Barker was 35-for-70 for 364 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions in five games — and two starts — this season.

Reese Phillips, who was sidelined by an achilles injury earlier this year, is expected to return for his junior season. He did not play quarterback this season and was 2-for-9 for 45 yards with one interception in three appearances as Towles’ backup in 2014.

High school quarterback Gunnar Hoak will join the Wildcats as a true freshman for the 2016 season. Hoak — a 6-foot-4, 190-pound prospect from Dublin, Ohio — is ranked by ESPN as a four-star recruit and the No. 14 pocket-passing QB in the class of 2016.

Hoak will graduate from high school in December and enroll at UK for the spring semester, which will allow him to participate in spring practice with the Wildcats. He completed 114 of 206 passes for 1,811 yards with 14 touchdowns and six interceptions this season.

Former Louisville Male quarterback Davis Mattingly was a preferred walk-on for the Wildcats this season and is also expected to return next season.

UK already has two commitments from quarterbacks in the class of 2017: Florida’s Mac Jones and Lexington native Walker Wood, who could switch positions when he gets to college.
