DWAYNE BACON – Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, VA) – 2015 SF; 6’-6”; 190; 5-Star; 247Sports rank 20;
9/5/2014 committed to Florida State. 1/19/2015
beat Villa Angela St. Joseph (Cleveland, OH) 76–72: FG 10/28; 3’s 5/11; FT
8/10; Reb 4; PF 2; TP 33; A 3; TO 1; Blk 0; Stl 2 – Oak Hill Academy won the
Bass Pro in Missouri the past 2 days, so I didn’t expect them to display much
energy. They started out lifeless, but long-time coach, Steve Smith, wouldn’t
accept that level of play. Using a variety of defenses, Oak Hill trailed by 8,
9, and 6 at the end of the first 2 quarters before taking charge in the 4th
quarter. Dwayne, originally from Lakeland, FL, had only 4 points at the end of
the 1st and 14 at the half. He is a prolific scorer with a variety
of shots and took over handling the ball in the 4th quarter. Hit
some long 3’s; drove baseline missing a “dipsy-doo;” missed a drive, but
followed with a tip; hit a 25’ 3 as time ran out; and turn-around J from the
free throw line. Made a couple of nice long outlet passes and a nice skip pass.
The negative is that his defense today was almost non-existent. A guard drove
around him as he was standing still (he was!). He watched the ball and totally
lost his man many times. He stood up straight too often and reaches rather than
moving his feet. If Leonard Hamilton can get this scorer to play defense, I
could see him getting a lot of playing time next year.

MARVIN BAGLEY III – Corona Del
Sol H.S.
(Tempe, AZ) – 2018 C; 6’-10”; 200; Freshmen not
rated; 1/17/2015 beat Putnam Vocational Technical Academy (Springfield, MA)
60–57 in OT: FG 5/8; 3’s 0/0; FT 7/8; Reb 9; PF 3; TP 17; A 1; TO 1; Blk 1; Stl
0 – Only a freshman, Bagley already has 6 offers, including from UCLA and
Arizona. Unfortunately, I didn’t see a lot of this game. However, I should get
another chance in the years he has left in high school. There has been talk
that he may attend Findlay Prep, but with Jerome Williams no longer Findlay’s
coach, I have no idea if this is still a possibility.

CARLTON BRAGGVilla
Angela-St Joseph
(Cleveland, OH); 2015 PF; 6’-8”; 205; 5-Star; 247Sports
rank 16; 1/8/2015 Committed to Kentucky
Kansas – 1/19/2015 lost to Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, VA) 72–76: FG 6/17;
3’s 0/3; FT 11/12; Reb 7; PF 4; TP 23; A 6; TO 1; Blk 3; Shots Blocked 2; Stl 2
– Played a lot on the outside and rarely posted up. Not saying that he doesn’t
go inside, as he got 12 of his 23 points on second chance points. Twice he
displayed really nice back to the basket, spin move for layups. Unselfish and
very good passer and looks to make the pass. His team didn’t look for him as
much as they should have, but he did not assert himself either. I expected that
he would impose himself as team was down late in the game, but didn’t show a
take-charge attitude. Nice looking J, but missed all 3 of his three-point
attempts. Team played zone and Bragg didn’t move his feet much on D. Looks like
a 2-3 year Kansas player to me.

JALEN BRUNSON Adlai E. Stevenson H.S. (Lincolnshire, IL); 2015 PG; 6’-1.5”; 190;
5-Star; 247Sports rank 19; 9/10/2014 committed to Villanova – 1/17/2015 lost to
Findlay College Prep (Henderson, NV) 58-84: FG 8/18; 3’s 4/5; FT 6/6; Reb 4; PF
1; TP 26; A 3; TO 2; Blk 0; Stl 0 – Son of Rick Brunson (Temple U. & NBA),
Jalen had a good scoring game. Looked as if he was shooting lights out with his
4 of 5 from the 3. Funny, but when you look at the stats you see he was only 4
of 13 inside the arc, all in the paint. Has a reputation as a good passer, but
today his 3 assists and 2 turnovers didn’t confirm that reputation. Looks like
a Nova player and will have a good career there under Jay Wright.

TRACI CARTERLife
Center Academy Prep
(Toronto, ON); 2015 PG; 6’-0”; 165; 3-Star; 247Sports
rank 130; 77% to Louisville – 1/18/2015
beat Orangeville Prep (Orangeville, Ontario) 64–50: FG 6/18; 3’s 2/7; FT 4/4;
Reb 7; PF 2; TP 23; A 10; TO 4; Blk 0; Stl 4 – I wouldn’t normally cover a
3-star with a 130 ranking, but I heard that Pitino would really like him. Maybe
Life Center’s coach, “Never Nervous” Pervis Ellison, had some influence here.
Traci is QUICK and is a defensive thief! Disruptive. Took a lot of shots, but
his 10 assists were impressive. Hate to say it, but I really liked watching
this kid. Didn’t shoot that well, but I suppose that makes him even more
appealing to Rick. At only 6’ I would expect him to be a 4-year player at UL
and be a defensive his last 2 years.

NOAH DICKERSON Montverde Academy (Montverde, FL); 2015 PF; 6’-8”; 245; 4-Star;
247Sports rank 56; 8/17/2014 committed to Florida after de-committing from
Georgetown earlier – Did not dress at City of Palms due to injured foot. - 1/19/2015
beat Bishop Gorman H.S. (Las Vegas, NV) 76–57: FG 2/7; 3’s 0/0; FT 2/4; Reb 8;
PF 4; TP 6; A 0; TO 2; Blk 0; Stl 2; 3 Shots Blocked – Due to foot injury,
wasn’t able to see his game at the end of December in Fort Myers. He is playing
now, but this bruiser is not yet in shape. This may have led to many of his
fouls, or maybe his physicality leads to the fouls. Had 8 rebounds even though he
is not in shape. Barring further injury, he looks as if he will be a force
around the basket and will make Montverde even better. Hope to see him after he
is in game shape to see the real Dickerson.

FRANKLIN HOWARD - Paul VI Catholic (Fairfax, VA); 2015 SG; 6’-4”; 185; 4-Star;
247Sports rank 77; 4/14/2014 committed to Syracuse – 1/19/2015 lost to Chaminade
College Prep (St Louis, MO) 78–88: FG 5/16; 3’s 1/4; FT 2/2; Reb 2; PF 3; TP 13;
A 5; TO 8; Blk 0; Stl 4 – Had torn ACL
in the left knee last year, so that would have to slow down his progress. This
was the 4th game I have seen Howard play this year. I like the way
he sees the floor and passes the ball, although he threw a couple of iffy (what
are you thinking?) passes. Has not shot that well in any of the games I have
seen, especially from 3, to see him as a strong SG. I hear he might have to
play some PG at Syracuse next year and that may be to his advantage, although I
didn’t see him get his teammates involved much today. But if you go to
Syracuse, you will probably be there 3-4 years before you develop and, even at
that, you probably won’t learn NBA quality defense while sitting in a zone.
Today he kept driving into traffic too much. Doesn’t kick to the open guys like
Jaylen Brown does.

CHASE JETERBishop
Gorman H.S.
(Las Vegas, NV); 2015 PF; 6’-11”; 230; 5-Star; 247Sports rank
8; 8/4/2014 committed to Duke – 1/19/2015 lost to Montverde Academy (Montverde,
FL) 57–76: FG 3/8; 3’s 0/0; FT 0/1; Reb 4; PF 4; TP 6; A 1; TO 4; Blk 0; Stl 2
– Didn’t make notes about Chase. Hey, at my age, if I don’t make notes I don’t
remember what I saw, especially when it is the 17th game in 3 days.
He is a very mobile big man. I anticipated much more of a game as Chase teamed
up with Stephen Zimmerman and hot-shooting soph Charles O’Bannon, Jr. Being a
Dookie, I’m sure he will develop into a very good college player for his junior
and senior seasons, but there is no way he fills Okafor’s shoes next year. Only
had 2 points at half and started out the game with an airball, goal tending,
and a basket interference. Disappointed with the Bishop Gorman team and their
body language. After being down only 5 points at the start of the 4th,
they were out-scored by 14 in the 4th.

DERRICK JONES Archbishop Carroll (Radnor, PA); 2015 PG; 6’-6”; 180; 4-Star;
247Sports rank 41; 11/13/2014 committed to UNLV – 1/17/2015 beat Simeon H.S.
(Chicago, IL) 77–68: FG 13/22; 3’s 1/2; FT 4/9; Reb 14; PF 3; TP 31; A 2; TO 1;
Blk 3; Stl 0 – I’ve seen this Philly kid play several times this year and,
although he is super athletic, I’ve never felt he was doing as much during
games as he could. I couldn’t decide if it was the system or the kid.
Everything changed this game, getting 17 points in the 1st quarter!
Derrick did it all today. 24 of his 31 points were in the paint, 12 of which
were 2nd chance points. Has a pretty jumper, but only hit 4 of 9
free throws. How does that happen? 8 of his rebounds were off the offensive
boards. Athleticism and hops has him playing 2” taller than his 6’-6”. Will be
on ESPN highlights next year at UNLV,

DONOVAN MITCHELL Brewster Academy (Wolfeboro, NH); 2015 SG; 6’-3”; 180; 4-Star;
247Sports rank 29; 8/7/2014 committed to UL – 1/18/2015 beat Montverde Academy
Prep (Montverde, FL) 100-69: FG 8/13; 3’s 1/3; FT 3/4; Reb 3; PF 1; TP 20; A 2;
TO 1; Blk 0; Stl 1 – Don’t be confused. This game was against Montverde Academy
PREP with CJ Jackson, not the highly
rated Montverde Academy with Ben Simmons. You better get used to seeing this UL
commit, because he is a player in the mold of Zona’s Rondae
Hollis-Jefferson. He does everything
well, including playing aggressive D. Smooth and quick. I’m told he if he only
scored 7 points, he would still control the game. Of his 20 points today, 14
were in the paint and 14 were off turnovers. New England has some of the top
prep teams in the country, with Brewster always being one of the best, loaded
with 7-8 high D-1 players.

DORAL MOORE - Montverde Academy (Montverde,
FL); 2015 C; 7’-0”; 220; 4-Star; 247Sports rank 60 – Committed to Wake Forest
5/13/2014 - 1/19/2015 beat Bishop Gorman H.S. (Las Vegas, NV) 76–57:
FG 4/6; 3’s 0/0; FT 0/3; Reb 4; PF 4; TP 6; A 0; TO 0; Blk 2; Stl 0 – At the City of Palms last month, Doral got about 24 total minutes in 4
games. As I said at that time, as he walks around he looks like an athlete, but
once the ball is tossed up he looked awful and will be a project for Wake
Forest. I thought it must have been a mistake that he had been listed as a UK
recruit. Today he was in the starting lineup and looked much better, going
against Stephen Zimmerman’s team. At times he looked as if he belonged on the
floor, but at other times he moves as if he has played very little basketball,
ending up with 4 fouls. Had some aggressive dunks, but doesn’t have good
footwork at all. With as much as he needs to develop, I don’t think the UK fans
would have the patience he will need. I’m happy for Doral that he is going to
Wake.

CHARLES O’BANNON, JRBishop Gorman H.S. (Las Vegas, NV);
2017 SG; 6’-4”; 170; 247Sports rank Unranked; – 1/19/2015 lost to Montverde
Academy (Montverde, FL) 57–76: FG 7/10; 3’s 3/5; FT 5/7; Reb 1; PF 4; TP 22; A 1;
TO 4; Blk 0; Stl 2 – Don’t know much about this sophomore, but do know that
Bishop Gorman would have lost by much more than the 19 without this kid’s 22
points. The son of a former UCLA great, he has nice elevation on his high
arching jumpers and is not afraid to drive. Not ranked by 247Sports, so maybe
this was not his typical game. However, I may want to Google him once in a
while to see his progress.

BEN SIMMONS – Montverde Academy (Montverde, FL) – 2015 SF; 6’-8”; 220; 5-Star; 247Sports rank 1;
10/14/2013 committed to LSU. 1/19/2015 beat
Bishop Gorman H.S. (Las Vegas, NV) 76–57: FG 15/24; 3’s 0/1; FT 6/11; Reb 9; PF
1; TP 36; A 1; TO 7; Blk 0; Stl 3 – Last year when I saw Ben at HoopHall I
said, “I don’t think this kid actually knows how good he can be yet.” Well,
this #1 player in the senior class knows how good he is and so does everybody
else. All you need to know about Ben is that he can, and does, do almost
everything – good outside shooting being the exception. Unselfish and makes
nice passes for assists. High basketball IQ. Flies to the basket. Plays under
control. Runs the floor. I really appreciate how he makes everyone around him
better! Of his 36 points, 30 were in the paint and 25 were points on turnovers.
As a junior commit to LSU last year, I’m gonna see more of him than I may want
next year. That’s the bad news. Good news that he will only be at LSU for one
year.
