which tells me a lot. He says that Cal said what he said and had no idea it would get out; he also says that there is no way that Cal said it as a recruiting pitch. Had Drew Franklin not tweeted it out, nobody would have known this was said. Sorry Cal disciples, but this is truly how Cal feels.

And? 4 Final Fours and a natty title. I'm still not sure what the issue is here for people like the OP. The guy has given UK 23.5% of its 17 Final Fours. UK went to 13 Final Fours over 70 years, for one every 5.38 years...which is good. Since Cal has been here UK has been to a Final Four 66% of the time compared to UK's 18% of the time lifetime before he got here. The guy clearly cares about winning, and if he doesn't, he sure fools everyone in America each year.

Glad to know that's how he truly feels and it's not just a recruiting pitch. He cares more about the human beings that he coaches and is like a father figure too, instead of us fans or tradition of the school. I would hope my piano teacher cared more about me than if I won the piano competitions I used to enter when I was younger.

The op is an obvious troll. FOUR FINAL FOURS in 5 years. 38-1 record last year. TWO NC games and one NC.If you are a UK fan and are not ecstatic about those numbers, go pull for ul, we don't want you as a fan.

Anyone nit picking every little thing Cal says, is NOT a UK fan! Period!

Iys all in you perspective and how you choose to be a fan......i, for example coulf care less what these players do in the NBA.....i care what they do at UK fan....I'm not a fill in the blank player fan....i eish all of them well in their endeavors but when you talk basketball. ...all i care is what they do when they wear the Blue and White

i sort of feel the same except I do want our former players to do well in the pros as well. But like you, my main concern is how well they do at UK. That said, whatever Cal has been doing, it has worked out well for UK, UK fans and the players. Not sure why any UK fan has an issue with Cal.

Who cares? Honestly... Our "fans" are absolutely ridiculous sometimes. Furthermore, if I were a parent of the kid going to play for Cal I would prefer he has his best interest at heart.... There's a program up the road L1C4? Id rather be players FIRST from all aspects.

Anyone who says anything in any public forum and says "I didn't expect it to get out!" in this day and age is acting like an idiot.

Everything gets out. Everything.

Matt Jones is a grade A D-bag...his web site is pretty much sh!t as the only purpose is had was actual information and it no longer provides any real information...and his show has even LESS information.

Cal knew those comments would get out and it was not only reported by Matt Jones lackey. Cal makes statements like that for effect and impact. Its a recruit tool just like the NBA practices on ESPN were a recruiting tool.

Sad thing is a large % of Cat fans are to stupid to connect the dots. If we had 8 players drafted that means POY is health the full year. If POY is healthy for a full year do we lose to anyone?? Not at all....we would have won the championship.....If 8 players get drafted what will the entire basketball world be talking about through the and even after the draft?? UK and UK only.....The next wave of great players will be hearing only about UK and how great it is.....people this is a simple process

I cannot believe there are fans that are ok with CAL or any other collegiate coach saying things like that. The next coach we have could start a "Team/University First" thing and the same ones that think Cal can do or say no wrong would be defend it just like they do this crap, and that is exactly what it is. We as fans were here long before Cal and will be here long after him. ..that's the way I see it.

So kyups01... By your logic a University should measure success not by graduation rate but the "prestige of the university?" Academic programs should not measure success rate of graduates passing professional examinations but always keep in mind the "University First." Or, better yet they should never market graduates/job placement rates... Seriously? Is not he purpose of each of these institutions to provide education AND opportunity? Why would not having the BEST INTEREST of your PLAYERS be the very thing a coach should do? Rather than USING the players, such a novel concept...

If Cal hadn't just finished off going to his 4th Final Four in 5 seasons, some of these fans might have a point.

But that's not the reality. The reality is that Cal's approach works best. I hope he stays another ten years and puts another 50 guys into the league and never once placates our fan base in the process.

Exactly. People are throwing a hissy fit over mere words. The results speak for themselves.

Yeah, Cal is an awful role model for caring about his players more than a bunch of redneck fans (the portion of the fanbase ticked off by his comments are the only ones I'm referring to here) who care not a damn about education or the University or Kentucky, but rather a game of basketball that they put disturbingly high on their lifes' priorities.

The people pissed off about Cal saying this really need to get a life outside of UK basketball. I'm a huge fan, but in the end it's a game. It's entertainment for people to watch. I would hope every coach in America has the best interests of the people they coach over the results of a game. I can't believe I even have to type that sentence. Let's compare the livelihood of human beings to the results of a game. Yeah, you'd have to be a moron to think the results are more important.

With all that said, Cal even gets results, so this is a moot point. Does his saying that mean his goal isn't to win the championship? No. It just means it isn't his top goal, which I'm fine with. Seriously, some of you people need to go out an explore the world. I promise you there are other interesting things outside of UK basketball.

Anyone who has a problem with this silly little statement should be reminded of all the times Tubby told us how winning a national championship was his primary goal each year. I enjoy the product much more under Calipari.

When Cal was at Memphis, Jones did not have many kind words for him. Now he is Cal's unofficial PR man.

Jones should know about prestigious universities as he picked Duke over UK

Yeah, Tubby did not really care about his players and the results showed on the court more years than not...and a team full of his recruits never sniffed a national title after 1998. Cal has has two more do it since his title team. That's the difference between Tubby and Cal. Cal may have had a Miller on the 2012 team (who did nothing under Coach G his frosh year and Cal helped develop him into a good player over 3 years), but even that team was mostly all Cal guys. Plus, Coach G sucked, and guys like Miller, Harrelson, and Liggins were did not do anything under G and the teams sucked. When Tubby came in I'm pretty sure Pitino had it rolling, and the guys on the 98 team played roles on previous very good UK teams.

To be honest, if we continue to have as much success then I don't care. People act like he was opposed to winning the title or something. Sure it's not the norm, or the way we are used to with this tradition but he continues to win and brings high character players here (no matter if they are here 1-4 years). Wouldnt take any other coach.

Couldn't this post have been in one of the 500 other on the same topic?Anyway in the past 4 seasons we have one championship,a loss in the title game, and a loss in the final four.If people are unhappy with that something is wrong with them.

You're one to talk, praising Duke and talking about lucky we are to even compete with them.

All this does is tell me that you hate Cal, if you hate Cal you hating the success he is having. If you hate his success then that means that you hate UK.

Your post = troll

You discovered our dirty secret!

We give great coaches leeway if their worst offense in 6 years is a mildly controversial quote!

Eeyores, please pay attention to the post I'm quoting and to this response.

For a hypothetical coach at UK:

1. He can talk about how he is players first as long as he takes great care of the program (wins, off court issues minimized, etc)

or

2. He can talk about how he is program first as long as he takes great care of the players (not abusing them like Gillispie, getting them to class, etc)

As long as he's performing like one of the best coaches in the game, neither of these approaches should bother a rational fan.

In fact, as long as he's performing like one of the best coaches in the game, and this is an example of one of his "worst offenses" at UK, then it's the detractors who are irrational.

Some of you idiots are so thirsty to take him down, you probably wouldn't know what to do with yourselves if he actually did something that was objectively bad, a serious thing like Pitino/Knight.

Or hell, even just one of those mean-spirited quotes like Calhoun or Gillispie used to give every press conference where he'd try to make student reporters cry.
If that happened, 3rex could cancel his cialis perscription. Guy would just walk around town with a permanent tent pitched in his pants.
