(St Louis, MO); 2016 SF; 6’-8”; 190; 5-Star; 247Sports rank 1;
Duke (38%), Kansas (27%), & UK (22%) – 1/19/2015 beat Paul VI H.S.
(Fairfax, VA) 88–78: FG 7/20; 3’s 1/6; FT 10/12; Reb 14; PF 3; TP 25; A 3; TO 5;
Blk 3; Stl 0 – I was really looking forward to seeing Jay, but also had the
bonus of sitting next to his grandmother and near his mom. Not the typical
grandmom, for she was a college athlete herself and totally understands the
game, cheering for Jay and an occasional cheer for Jay’s friend, V.J. King. (She
said she dialed her volume back since we were sitting near Biancardi’s ESPNU
microphone!). For most of the game Jayson and V.J. King guarded each other. Jayson
did not have a very productive 1st half, scoring only 4 points and
missing his first 6 shots. After those first 6 misses, he shot 7 for 14. Both
teams were a little sloppy, but Jayson showed lots of his skills throughout the
2nd half. Won’t be 17 until this March. Has a beautiful turn-around
fade from 12’ that grandmom says is one his favorite moves. Makes nice passes
while on the move and does not hog the ball. Unselfish and does not need to
shoot to make the team effective. Makes nice left-right moves, then elevates
for nice looking jumpers, going straight up with good ball rotation. Great body
control driving the lane. Draws a lot of fouls. He played more aggressive 2nd
half. Strong rebounder. He will gain some needed strength as he matures. His
game is perfect for what Calipari does with his players. One game does not
necessarily show you who a player is (Stanley Johnson was horrible in his one
game here last year), but I think at this point that Harry Giles should be
rated a little higher than Jayson.
