DADYERO

The thinking is that babies need high contrast to develop their rods and cones- without "sharp corners." Their eyes can track curving lines, but can't follow around corners after abrupt stops. If you can give them images that designed to provide this, they can develop their eyesight as early as possible which will help them take everything in, which is pretty much all they do.

I'm terrible at swaddling, but George loves it so much he at least gets the overnight swaddle from Anth. We've got one sleep sack, but i just don't think it's cuddly enough for him and it might be too big. How do we break the swaddle habit since he can't be swaddled once he rolls over? Tia.

Also, baby spit up. Lovely. I thought all the mommy bloggers said breastfed babies don't spit up as much? False. And he's eating fine and gaining plenty of weight.

The love component is immutable and doesn't need to be discussed. It's another level of "getting it."

The tricky stuff is gaining knowledge and implementing it to give your kid the best shot at life.

I only read up for a few hours or so far - it's pretty basic concepts - you've spent 10x as much time chasing the perfect brisket.

Very cool wall Joey.

Your kid will enjoy ripping them off the wall and eating them just as soon as he/she can.

My 4 year old daughter is more mature than I am, often correcting me on my manners, a damn princess. My nearly 2 year old son screams bloody murder if he's not allowed a sneak peak at the heinous deposit he proudly leaves in his pampers. He may also be part honey badger.

Each kid is different.

Abandon all hope of ever doing anything the same as you did before. Sleeping, eating, working, whatever. They are the most difficult thing in your life and it's not even close. They also happen to be the most amazing things too and the scales happen to tip in their favor more times than not.

Ha. Yeah. I don't know about all that with galaxies and such. I'll ask super lurker about the flash cards as I get bored with him on my lap. His eyes are starting to cross which I'm told is normal, maybe the most scared I've been since the day after he was born.

His parents are pretty intelligent, mom especially. We'll read to him often, give him a good home, send him to school, make him do his home work, and generally give him all the needed resources to be successful. If he doesn't go to MIT I won't be disappointed.

The swaddle thing did have me concerned because it does look uncomfortable and potentially dangerous but from most respectable sources it says snug in the chest.

Also, yes when it's time, just like our Dad's did, I'll make sure he knows how to access porn. Although I assume he'll be way ahead with the intrranets and all. Regardless if mom has his on parental lock down I'll leave my tablet or whatever gadget we're using in 10 years available. Sad that a terribly hidden box of playboy and hustlers in the basement isn't the method I'll get to use. Might figure something out for nostalgia. Or just pick up Cinemax.

Also, Joey our nursery color schemes are pretty similar although I made sloot get some actual color in there so the kid has some creativity. Blue and grey... meh. She picked up some greens and I went with the Dr. Seuss theme.

Lol at porn planning this far in advance.

And c-sections aren't good for recovering as quickly, but getting the baby out safely is the main goal. Good luck. The "football hold" is good for breastfeeding after a c-section, norm. I'm sure the nurses will help with all that.

The eye crossing thing is just them trying to focus. Print out some cards, Anth.

Wouldn't that mean a few more nights in the hospital i.e. medically supervised childcare and your last chance at interrupted sleep?

It would. But it would also mean that my responsibilities go up 10x when we leave the hospital, because she basically won't be able to do anything for a bit. It could also mean issues with work, since she's been off on bed rest since the 2nd week of June. Don't know exactly how much longer she'll be able to be off, especially with pay.

I actually found and read a someone's thesis on nursery color theory (no joke, dK), and have a pretty good background in color theory myself. (I'm my previous life, I briefly worked with a master, http://www.donaldkaufmancolor.com/ )

As long as you don't overstimulate, you're fine, IMO. I went all-in on having the colors aid in enhancing sleep and rest with soothing blue and greys.

I went with Benjamin Moore Natura and was the first person to ever ask for it at our local dealer. The white, light grey, and lighter grey are all tints of the same base.

The decals are made to be torn off, HotDogMan!

When I was a kid, my parents let me do whatever I wanted to one wall (drawing, stickers, etc). This is the plan for the "Galaxy Wall." We just gave him a head start.

Also, can confirm: the wife is sporting DD's.

Norm- all 3 of mine were born via C Section out of necessity. It's definetly not ideal but it's not the end of the world. It basically means you'll get a lot more bonding time with your baby immediately after its born while mom recovers. I loved it. its totally unfair and selfish but hey just doing my job

We are currently looking into a new nightlight/soother thingy for our 9 month old. Currently she likes this one:

She will turn this on in the middle of the night in order to go back to sleep. However, we had to lower the crib and the thing fastens at the top so she'll have to at least sit up to turn it on. Does anyone have any recs for other options, maybe something that plays continuously and projects some light?

Our little girl just had her first soccer practice last night. She's 3.....so, it's not like it was anything spectacular......but, still, Momma and I were there cameras in hand.

"Enough with the pictures......it's a parking lot."

They told us at the final ultrasound that she was 6lb 3oz. We were expecting her to be close to 7lbs by the time we delivered, so you can imagine the surprise when we saw how little she was.

Congrats! That's a tiny girl. George was small at 6lb 13oz and is still in newborn clothes and diapers. No c-section?

My 1.5 year old daughter has been having night terrors, per the doctor. Basically she gets up around 2am every night screaming bloody murder for me, scared beyond belief. I get her out of her crib and lie her next to me in my bed. She stops crying immediately and snuggles me very tightly. It's unreal. Congrats norm, nothing like a little girl.

Good stuff, Joey. We have a few of those items.

I'll bounce for now and lurk. Congrats to all the newly minted dads and moms in here and best of luck to all the rest expecting a future Cats fan. My wife is UNC. Terrible.

It appears George went 7 (SEVEN!) hours between feedings tonight. Anth could have given ol dude a bottle, but I don't think he did. That was some much needed sleep. Let's try for another 7 after this, kiddo.

http://m.target.com/p/fisher-price-newborn-rock-n-play-sleeper/-/A-15263603Sloot- we used one of those "rock-n-play" sleepers with ours. Kept them from rolling over while they slept and also gave them the "bundled up tight ad secure" feeling of being swaddled. Worked great for us but I'm sure Joey did his thesis on them and will tell you that they cause teenage impotence.
That should only be used for supervised naps, per the American Academy of Pediatrics.

They want babies to sleep on their back on a flat, firm surface.

With twins, we were so exhausted we would put them to bed at 8pm. In a few days they were able to go to bed on their own with ease. You will have a few curveballs.

* tip for new parents- when you hear your child breathing on the monitor and it sounds like an engine don't freak out and run to the hospital. It's the croup. Just take junior for a ride with the windows down or hold them near an open freezer door and it should do the trick. The 1st time that happened I scooped him up and ran to the emergency room and by the time I got there it went away.
